Private label vs OEM vs ODM, explained.
The three terms buyers hear most, what each actually means, and how to pick the right route for your brand.

Private label, OEM and ODM describe how much of the product is yours versus the manufacturer's: private label puts your brand on a producible product, OEM builds to your own design, and ODM adapts the manufacturer's base product to your brand.

Private label
Private label means a producible product finished with your branding — your labels, artwork and packaging. It is the fastest way to launch, because the product itself is already defined.
You control the brand and presentation rather than the underlying pattern.
OEM — your design
OEM (original equipment manufacturer) means the factory builds to the design, patterns and technical pack you provide. It suits brands that have their product fully defined and want it produced to that exact spec.
It gives the most control, and needs the most preparation from you.
ODM — develop from a base
ODM (original design manufacturer) means you start from the manufacturer's existing base product and adapt fit, fabric, artwork and branding. It is faster and lower-risk for new brands without full technical packs.
Which is right depends on how developed your product already is — OEM for a finished design, ODM or private label to move faster.
A practical way to choose the model
Choose private label when the product direction already exists and the main work is branding and presentation. Choose OEM when you are supplying the product specification, measurements or tech pack. Choose ODM when you want to start from a manufacturer’s existing product direction and modify it into an approved brand-specific version.
Whichever model you use, write down who supplies the pattern/specification, who approves changes, what belongs to the buyer, what is included in labels/packaging and which physical sample controls bulk production.

| Question | Private label | OEM | ODM |

An example with a BJJ gi
Private label: you choose an existing gi, then add your woven labels, embroidery and bag. OEM: you send your own pattern, with your collar build, sleeve length and skirt length, and the factory makes exactly that. ODM: you start from the factory’s gi, then change the weave, the fit and the branding until it becomes your product.
What to agree in writing on any route
- Who owns the pattern and the artwork.
- Whether the factory can sell the same base product to others (in ODM it often can; your branding and changes stay yours).
- An NDA before you share artwork or patterns.
- Which approved sample controls the bulk order.

Private label, OEM and ODM: frequently asked questions
Is private label the same as OEM?
No. Private label brands a producible product; OEM builds to your own design and patterns.
Which is best for a new brand?
ODM or private label are usually faster and lower-risk when you do not yet have a full technical pack.
Can I move from ODM to OEM later?
Yes. Many brands start with ODM or private label and move to full OEM as their design matures.
