Grappling & Fight Shorts Manufacturer for Combat Sports Brands
A no-gi short fails in three places: the waistband rolls, the gusset splits, or the slit is cut so short you cannot pass guard. All three are construction decisions, not fabric ones.

We manufacture grappling, no-gi and fight shorts in polyester/spandex, with sublimation, embroidery, applique, custom drawcords and waistband branding to your specification. The minimum is 30 pieces per design and colorway, sizes mixable. Samples take 7-10 working days and bulk production takes 20-30 working days after you approve the sample.
The gusset is the whole short
Nearly every pair of grappling shorts that splits, splits at the crotch. A short cut from flat panels puts all the strain of a high guard or a deep squat onto one seam intersection. A diamond gusset spreads that load across four seams and adds the stretch exactly where the hip opens.
When you are comparing two pairs that look identical, turn them inside out. The one with a gusset is the one that lasts.
Why no-gi shorts have no pockets
A finger or a toe caught in a pocket is a broken finger or a torn ligament. Most no-gi rulesets ban pockets for exactly this reason, along with zips, metal fastenings and external drawcord loops.
The same logic applies to the waistband: a long external tie cord is a grip handle and a hazard, which is why the cord sits inside the band on a properly built short.
Grappling, MMA and Muay Thai shorts are not the same garment
Grappling and no-gi shorts are close-cut, pocketless and built around the gusset. MMA fight shorts are similar but usually shorter, with a stronger velcro closure and more panelled construction for striking range.
Muay Thai shorts are a different garment entirely: loose, wide-legged, high-cut at the hip for kicks, usually satin or nylon, with an elastic waistband. Using one for the other is uncomfortable rather than dangerous, but they are not interchangeable.
Developing a short for a brand or academy
The fit sample is the whole project. Hip opening, rise, slit length and leg opening are the four measurements that decide whether people buy a second pair, and they cannot be judged from a tech pack alone.
For artwork, sublimation prints before the panels are cut, so coverage is unlimited and there is no cracked print at the seams. Screen printing is cheaper for a one or two colour logo on a plain base. Decide this before the sample, because it changes how the panels are made.
Size grading matters more here than on a rash guard, because waist and thigh do not scale together. Grade the waistband and the thigh separately or the large sizes will fit badly.
What to check on a grappling short
| Fabric | Four-way stretch polyester or poly-spandex, typically 160–220 GSM. Heavier wears longer; lighter dries faster and rolls cooler. |
|---|---|
| Gusset | A diamond or triangular stretch gusset at the crotch. This is the single biggest factor in whether a short survives and whether you can move in guard. |
| Side slit / stretch panel | A slit or a spandex panel from the hem up the outer thigh. Too short and you lose hip range; too long and it flaps and gets gripped. |
| Waistband | Internal drawcord with a flat, non-slip inner band. A rolled elastic band migrates during a round. |
| Closure | Velcro fly or a tie-only front. No zips, no buttons, no metal — these injure training partners. |
| Seams | Flat-locked or bonded. A standard overlocked inseam abrades the inner thigh over long rounds. |
| Pockets | None. A pocket catches fingers and toes and is banned in most no-gi rulesets. |
| Length | Typically mid-thigh to just above the knee. Longer rides up when you shoot; shorter exposes the knee on the mat. |
| Printing | Sublimation for full-coverage artwork, screen print for flat spot colour, heat transfer only for small marks. |
Grappling shorts: frequently asked questions
What is the difference between grappling shorts and MMA shorts?
Grappling and no-gi shorts are close-cut, pocketless and built around a stretch gusset for guard work. MMA fight shorts are usually shorter with a stronger velcro closure and more panelling for striking range. Both avoid pockets and metal.
Can you wear regular gym shorts for no-gi?
Not safely. Pockets catch fingers and toes, zips and drawstrings injure training partners, and non-stretch fabric splits at the crotch. Most gyms and rulesets require purpose-built no-gi shorts.
What length should grappling shorts be?
Mid-thigh to just above the knee for most people. Longer rides up when you shoot a takedown; shorter leaves the knee exposed on the mat.
What fabric are grappling shorts made from?
Four-way stretch polyester or poly-spandex, usually 160–220 GSM, with a stretch gusset. Heavier fabric lasts longer; lighter dries faster.
Can I get custom grappling shorts with my own design?
Yes. Sublimation allows full-coverage artwork with no seam cracking; screen print suits a one or two colour logo. Send your artwork and target fit and we will build a sample to it.
What is the minimum order for custom grappling shorts?
The minimum order is 30 pieces per design and colorway, and sizes can be mixed freely inside that minimum.
How long do custom shorts take to produce?
Samples take 7-10 working days. The sample fee is typically USD 100-200 per sample depending on the product and specification, and is credited against your bulk order. Bulk production takes 20-30 working days from the date you approve the sample.
