BJJ Gi Patch Manufacturer — Woven, Embroidered and Sublimated
A patch has to survive the wash, sit in a legal position and look like your brand. Those are three different decisions and most people only think about the third.

We manufacture woven, embroidered and sublimated BJJ gi patches for academies, teams and apparel brands, made to your dimensions, border style, thread colors and backing. The minimum is 100 pieces per design. Samples take 7-10 working days and bulk production takes 20-30 working days after sample approval.
Patch placement rules in brief
This is a short summary. For the full diagrams and rules, see our BJJ gi patch placement guide and the IBJJF gi requirements.
Competition rulesets define specific permitted areas on the jacket, the trousers and the belt, and patches outside those areas get the gi rejected or the patch cut off at the inspection table. The permitted zones are set out in each organisation’s current rulebook, and they have been revised between seasons — a layout that passed two years ago is not automatically safe.
The practical rule when you are designing a layout: place to the rulebook for your event, sew everything on, and check placement again on each size in the range. A patch position that looks balanced on an A2 jacket can sit over a seam on an A4.
Training-only gis and academy gear are not bound by this, which is why a lot of academy stock carries placements a competition gi could not.
Attachment is what actually fails
The most common reason a patch is rejected is not its position — it is that a corner has lifted. Iron-on adhesive softens in a hot wash and a gi gets washed after every session. Sew-on is the only attachment that survives a season.
For a heavy patch on a lightweight jacket, the stitch should catch the jacket fabric and not just the collar tape, and the area behind a large back patch is usually reinforced so the patch does not pull the weave out of shape.
Specifying a patch for production
Send vector artwork where you have it. A logo supplied as a small raster image has to be redrawn before it can be woven or embroidered, and the redraw is where detail quietly changes.
Give the finished size in millimetres, the edge type, the backing, and the thread or Pantone references you need matched. Embroidery has a practical detail floor: lettering below roughly 4 mm cap height fills in, so a logo with small print usually becomes a woven patch instead.
For a first order, approve a physical patch sample before bulk. Colour on a screen and colour in thread are not the same thing, and it is cheaper to find that out on one patch than on five hundred.
Choosing a patch type
| Woven | Thread woven into the design. Holds fine detail, small text and gradients. Flat, thin, lowest profile — the usual choice for a detailed logo or a small sponsor badge. |
|---|---|
| Embroidered | Stitched onto a backing cloth. Raised, textured, bold. Best for simple shapes and thick lettering; fine detail fills in and is lost. |
| Sublimated | Printed full colour onto fabric. Handles photographic artwork and unlimited colours. Flattest finish, lowest cost per unit at volume, less texture. |
| Merrowed edge | Thick overlocked border. Standard for square, circular and shield shapes. |
| Laser-cut / hot-cut edge | Sealed edge that follows any outline. Needed for a shaped patch that is not a simple geometric form. |
| Sew-on backing | The only backing competition rules accept. Required for anything worn in an event. |
| Iron-on backing | Convenient for training gear and retail packs. Lifts in a hot wash and is normally rejected at a competition uniform check. |
| Velcro backing | Removable, for a gi worn across multiple teams or sponsors. Needs a hook panel sewn to the gi. |
Gi patch: frequently asked questions
Where can you put patches on a BJJ gi?
Competition rulesets define specific permitted areas on the jacket, trousers and belt. Anything outside those areas is removed or the gi is rejected at inspection. Check the current rulebook for your event before finalising a layout; training gis are not restricted.
Are iron-on gi patches allowed in competition?
Generally no. Competition rules require patches to be sewn on securely, and iron-on adhesive lifts in a hot wash. Use sew-on backing for anything worn at an event.
Woven or embroidered patches — which is better?
Woven for fine detail, small text and gradients; embroidered for bold shapes and a raised, textured look. Lettering below about 4 mm cap height will not hold in embroidery.
What is the minimum order for custom gi patches?
It depends on the method and size, because each design needs its own setup. Send the artwork, finished size and quantity you have in mind and we will confirm the MOQ for that specific patch.
Can patches be removed and reused?
Only with a velcro backing and a hook panel sewn to the gi. Sewn and iron-on patches do not transfer cleanly between gis.
How long do custom patches take to produce?
Samples take 7-10 working days. The sample fee is typically USD 100-200 per sample depending on the product and specification, and is credited against your bulk order. Bulk production takes 20-30 working days from the date you approve the sample.
Related: Patches are usually ordered with custom BJJ gis or for academy programs. Embroidered logos directly on garments: custom embroidery.
